keep an eye on Black Screen Records' feeds for the next few hours :) It's a lovely pressing too and it's seen several repressings on different color vinyl. It comes in a gatefold jacket and includes some goodies such a booklet with a portrait of one of the in-game characters and a poster for an in-game event. My copy of the release is the first pressing on blue and pink translucent colored vinyl.

Obviously a 2LP can't contain the full 3+ hour score, but it's a nice selection of some of the game's imo best tracks (curated by composer Garoad himself). It's hard to pick favorites, but "Hopes And Dreams", "Karmotrine Dream" and Your Love Is A Drug" are up there for me. And it fits the setting of the game too (surprise - something I've actually played!) and helps build that unique atmosphere and the occasional Karmotrine induced dream. It's a solid mix of upbeat and chill tracks and something that always feels right when putting it on - a "perfect for almost any occasion" soundtrack. Think of the music as an 80s synthwave anime soundtrack mixed with 90s 16-bit game tunes and we're somewhere around the right spot. For each new patron you get to choose a playlist of music from the bar's jukebox and that's the game's soundtrack - and there's over 3 hours of it! For those out of the loop VA-11 HALL-A is a cyberpunk bartending visual novel-style adventure game that's all about mixing drinks and changing lives by affecting the moods (and sobriety levels) of your patrons. Sadly all this insanity only clocks in at 39 minutes and 16 seconds, but then the upside means you can’t get too bored or go too insane listening to it.In anticipation of today's upcoming VA-11 HALL-A announcement from Black Screen Records I thought it fitting to take a look at its original vinyl release from all the way back in 2017. Having done all of the Vib-Ripple section himself, Masaya resorts to a circus like cabaret style of just completely throw you off course from anything you’ve really heard at a long length before! I think the closest I’ve heard to the style and feel here is possibly the Hanjuku Hero series.

Masaya Matsuura however goes one better and tops it with “Vib-Ribbon – How to Play” – a mind bending silly track of blips and bleeps that still makes me laugh years after first hearing it. Some songs works better than others and only “Do You Know?” has a truly awful section where the song slows down on a vocal note that pierces the ears! Not nice! However the rest of their contribution is simply mental! Each song like “Oops” has catchy chorus’ and verses that are played through at different speeds. “Laugh & Peace” provide 6 tracks that sound like a rock band that has been compressed and pushed through a hyperactive anime computer speaker. However aside from that, there are some extremely original computer generated music. Of the 32 tracks on this CD, around half are about 10 seconds long giving some random Vibri vocal snippets which are cute, endearing and maybe to butch males, the kind of thing you’ve been dreading for years. The cult games allowed you to pop your own CD’s into your PlayStation (1 or 2)and then play with Vibri to survive your CD collection! However you were also given some songs on the game itself to play with and that’s what appears on this disc of delight. Together with “Laugh & Peace” a quite random and seemingly ear dead pair, they created a dual soundtrack “Vib-Ripple & Vib-Ribbon OST”. In fact should his visions have ever been told to a psychiatrist, he’d probably have been locked up a LONG time ago! However thankfully for us, that never happened. Masaya Matsuura is one of the most unique composers in video game music of all time.
